A Primer of Ecology, N. J. Gotelli, Sinauer Associates, 1995, 1999, or 2001. Pages for the 1st edition are abbreviated as "G" on syllabus.
Ecology, 3rd edition, M. Begon, J.L. Harper, and C. R. Townsend, Blackwell Science, 1996. Abbreviated as "BHT" on syllabus.
Recommended Texts:
Ecology: Theories and Applications, 4th edition, P. D. Stiling, Prentice Hall Publishers, 2001. Abbreviated as "S"  on syllabus.
Biological Diversity, M. Huston, Cambridge Press, 1994. Abbreviated as "H"  on syllabus.

All four will be available at the reserve desk in the Biology Library at Columbia University
Additional assigned readings will be made available later




Grading and Requirements: Your grade in this course will be determined as follows:

2 midterm exams (25% each =  50%)
1 final exam (30%) = 30%
7 problem sets or worksheets =  20%
Final Ground Rules:
Examinations will include objective questions (multiple choice, T & F, fill in the blank) as well as short essay questions (approx 4 sentences).
No make-ups or late work will be accepted.
Problem sets will consist of between 3-10 questions and will be due two class periods after they were handed out.
There may be dates where an open-book worksheet will be used to substitute for lecture - dates will be announced as soon as they are known.
