The
Front Gate
Next, the viewer walks through
the Front Gate and on to the Imperial Gate. At the Imperial Gate,
the viewer is made aware of the subtle use of form and line, natural and
artificial shapes that will prove be so characteristic of his journey through
Katsura.
Detail of the Imperial Gate
The rough unstripped cork
of the oak logs which form the ridge pole, two posts, and outer beams are
in sharp contrast to contrived rectangularity of the cross beam and the
sidings. In addition to this, The gate itself is particular in the
way it evokes "mountain-hut" imager, rather than the usual pomp and refinement
one would expect from an imperial gate.
