Tokonoma in the First Room of the Old Shoin   Now inside the Old Shoin, one of the first things the viewer notices is the ochre design of paulownia which covers almost everywall.  This design attests to the imperial status of the Hachijô family, the initial owners of Katsura.  Also, it is interesting that the Old Shoin does not exactly follow the classical shoin style, but rather, could be looked at as a very early stage in the development of the sukiya style, which grew out of the shoin.
