Turn2 Us

Program Overview:
In June of 2001, Turn 2 Us was created as a collaborative effort between Public School 128M of Washington Heights, Morgan Stanley's Children's Hospital of New York-Presbyterian, and New York Yankee’s Derek Jeter Turn 2 Foundation in order to provide preventive mental health services within the school setting to children at risk. In 2007, the Turn 2 Us model was piloted at a 2nd school –PS4M.

Mission and Goals:
Our mission is to enable our youth to internalize healthy lifestyles through a variety of physical and psycho-educational preventive interventions. These interventions are aimed to prevent at-risk behaviors which research indicates may lead to health and mental health related issues, such as early onset diabetes, obesity, use of drugs or alcohol, truancy and drop out.

Goals are to:
• Provide school wide mental health promotion and secondary prevention services to at-risk students in elementary schools;
• Improve school communities’ literacy regarding mental health, well-being and academic/social success;
• Document the effectiveness of this model program

Number of people served per year:
Intensive: 220 students, less intense: 2 school communities (1400 children, parents and school staff)

Outcomes:
Increased: Attendance; Standardized Test Scores
Improved: Academic + Social Performance; General Self Esteem
