Selection 2: Carmen/Don José: duet "C'est toi, c'est moi"[Act IV]

The scene is a square in Seville. At the back is the entrance to the bullring, where a bullfight is to take place, starring Escamillo, to whom Carmen is strongly attracted. There is great excitement. Vendors sell water, oranges, fans, and other items. Carmen and Escamillo enter, and sing a duet. Escamillo enters the bullring. Some of the gypsy girls warn Carmen that she is in danger from Don José, but she scorns their warnings.

Don José appears from the shadows and bars her way into the bullring. They argue...

The final great duet between Don José and Carmen, during which she finally admits her love for the Toreador, and Don José stabs her, declaring his love for her, is conducted largely in an impassioned recitative (with full orchestra), but with two aria-like melodic sections, each comprising two verses.

  Both Carmen and José listen to the cheering in silence. Carmen, when she hears the final shouts herself, lets out a cry of "Ah!" in pride and joy. Don José does not once take his eyes off her.
