About
Several Saudi women bloggers have chosen to blog in English. Their reasons are varied. Below are some of their reasons given in their own words during email interviews, or as posed on their blogs.

Ubergirl 87 said in an email interview: "I blog in English because I can't type in Arabic and I'm too lazy to learn"

Saudi stepford Wife wrote on her blog:
"Saudi gender roles and everyday life are being redefined as you read this. I feel like talking about it, in English, so it can be read in the furthest reaches of the planet. There is more to me that what exists within the domestic sphere and that's what I'm trying to maintain through this dialogue with the world. This is about MY life and MY experiences within this small town."

American Bedu is a blog written by Carol Fleming, a former American diplomat who is married to a Saudi man. She has recently moved to Saudi Arabia and is one of the several women expat-bloggers in Saudi Arabia. She attributes Saudi women blogging in English in part to the restrictions on the freedom of expression in Saudi Arabia. In a recent email interview, she said:

"There can be mixed views on whether blogging is supported. Saudi Arabia does not yet have freedom of speech and especially those blogging in Arabic have to choose their words carefully (blogger Fuad Farhan was arrested for the point of views he was posting on his blog). Bloggers in English have more freedom since these blogs are less likely to fall under intense scrutiny by the monitoring agencies although that being said, there are a number of influential Saudis who do follow the Saudi blogosphere and if a blogger writes the wrong words that can be construed as detrimental to the Kingdom or the Royal Family, there is a risk of repercussion."

Fleming cautions that while it is good that women are finding the courage to actively express themselves.
"Sometimes they may express too freely which I attribute to their naivite on how widespread the internet is."
