Amerikanischer Vormarsch am Untermainkai / The Americans enter the city at Untermainkai. Which is the street that goes along the north bank of the Main river between Wiesenhuttenstraße and Neue Mainzer Straße, near where the Hotel Intercontinental is today, just southeast of the Hauptbahnhof. Two divisions of the US 7th Army (which I was in 18 years later) crossed the Wilhemsbrücke — now Friedensbrücke — from Sachsenhausen on March 27, 1945, to enter the northern part of the city, fighting house to house with sporadic fighting continuing for about a week. And then for Frankfurt the war was over. Click here to see a film of this scene as the US Army takes Frankfurt, Heidelberg, Aschaffenburg, and other towns in the area.
