Flyer dropped on Frankfurt and Mannheim in March 1945:

From the Supreme Headquarters, Allied Expeditionary Force to the civilian population of Frankfurt am Main, Mannheim, and Ludwigshafen.

You live in one of the most important industrial areas of Germany. The war industries of Frankfurt and Mannheim-Ludwigshafen are now subject to pitiless bombardment.

It is not, however, the goal of the Allies to annihilate the German people. Only the German war machine should be destroyed.

The Allied Supreme Commander makes the following announcement.

  1. The advisory applies to all parts of the urban district of Frankfurt am Main, inluding the following suburbs: Niederursel, Heddernheim, Eschersheim, Eckenheim, Ginnheim, Preungesheim, Seckbach, Fechenheim, Bürgel, Offenbach, Oberrad, Niederrad, Griesheim, Rödelheim, Hausen, Praunheim.
  2. The advisory applies to all parts of the urban district of Mannheim-Ludwigshafen, including the following suburbs: Sandhofen, Waldhof, Käfertal, Wallstadt, Feudenheim, Seckenheim, Neckarau, Mundenheim, Rheingönheim, Mutterstadt, Friesenheim, Oggersheim, Oppau, Edesheim, Frankental.
  3. These are now combat areas. All residents of these areas are asked to remove themselves and their families from the combat zone to safety.
  4. Especially you are advised that in the above-named areas you can find safety in a bunker or a shelter.

Your life depends on your immediate compliance with this advisory. Do it now! Get out of the combat zone! Get out of the war!

Dwight D. Eisenhower
General
Supreme Commander of Allied Forces
S.H.A.E.F, 17 March 1945
