"Passengers queue for the ferry to cross the river Main" (just after the European war ended in mid-1945), Photo by Lee Miller, from Lee Miller's War (a collection of her wartime photos, articles, and diary entries), edited by Antony Penrose, Thames & Hudson (1992, 2005), ISBN 0-500-28558-5, p.170. The river separates Frankfurt into two parts with most of the city to the north, Sachsenhausen and Niederrad to the south. They were connected by at least nine bridges which were bombed so the only way across at war's end was by ferry (lower left).
