The story of the 47 Ronin is one of
the most common themes of period films in modern Japan, at least until the
early 1960s. Of some 140 films that deal in some way with the Chushingura
legend, the great majority were made before World War II and are now lost.
Only two are currently available with English subtitles, of which summaries
and analyses are provided here.
