Course Description:
Applied Physics juniors and seniors attend both sessions each week, but have different
assignments over the course of the term.
The first third of the course will include reviews of problems from past Graduate Record Exams in Physics.
Also during the first third and into the second third of the course, there will be presentations and discussions
on several topics in applied physics and the professsion of applied physics. This will include
discussions about graduate school, the responsible conduct of research, nanophysics, energy, and so on to be presented by
the instructor and invited faculty, and targeted discussions led by teams of juniors. In the last third of the course,
seniors will individually present
their projects in some area of applied physics, which could be either original work or a critical discussion of
some aspect of applied physics; in either case, the presentation will be in an area that is new to them.
The course grade will be determined by class attendance and participation,
(juniors) leading assigned discussions, and (seniors) presentation of projects.
