INTRODUCTION

Netscape Navigator is software used for accessing information on the WorldWide Web; that is, from sites on the Internet which may be physically anywhere in the world and which may consist of text, graphics, sound, or video. Netscape and your network connection bring this wealth of information directly to your personal computer. Although Netscape Navigator is commercial software, Netscape Communications, the developer, allows it to be used free of charge at educational institutions.

Netscape Navigator will allow you to browse the Web, download files, read netnews, or manage your electronic mail. A short discussion of each of these functions can be found on the pages that follow.

Netscape Navigator includes an extensive online handbook. (Select Handbook from the Help menu to access it.) We recommend that you refer to this Handbook in addition to the Web pages listed here to learn more about using Netscape Navigator.

A NOTE ON VERSIONS

Customized Navigator Version 3.02/3.03 vs. non-customized versions, Navigator vs. Communicator, 40-bit vs. 128-bit encryption

REQUIREMENTS

In order to use Netscape Navigator to access information over the Internet, your computer must have either a SLIP or PPP dial-up (off-campus) or a direct Ethernet connection. Hardware requirements can be found in the User Guides for the AcIS Internet Software.

OBTAINING NETSCAPE NAVIGATOR

This section will lead you through downloading a new copy of Netscape Navigator, installing and configuring it, and learning more about using it for browsing the Web, reading netnews, and managing your e-mail.

STEP 1.
The first thing you should do is to create a bookmark so that you can return to this page after you download the new software.

Select Add Bookmark from Netscape's Bookmarks menu NOW.

If you go back and look at the Bookmarks menu, you will see QuickGuide to Netscape Navigator at the bottom of the list. If you select this bookmark when you are viewing another web page, you will be brought back here.

STEP 2.
Now you will download and install a new version of Netscape Navigator. If you have not read the Requirements section above, please do so NOW.

After you download the software, you should:

  1. Quit the copy of Netscape that you are running now.
  2. Install the new version.
  3. Start up the new version that you have installed.
  4. Select the QuickGuide to Netscape Navigator bookmark from the Bookmarks menu.

After selecting the bookmark, you will find yourself back here. Proceed to Step 3, Configuration.

You can print this page now if you want to have these instructions to refer to rather than remembering them.

Download Netscape NOW.

STEP 3.
Now that you have returned with the new version of Netscape running, you can proceed to configure it. If you had a previous version of Netscape on your computer, your new Netscape will use the same settings as the earlier version. However, you should proceed with this step to make sure that everything is configured properly.

Configure Netscape NOW.

STEP 4.
Now that Netscape Navigator is properly configured, you can learn more about using it.
