Diary entry by Schenker, April 11, 1917

11. IV. 17 [...] [...]

Diary entry by Schenker, April 11, 1917

April 11, 1917 [...] — Miss Elias|1 hands over 10,000 Kroner to me in cash for purposes of my works, with the words „temporarily“: I instantly conceive a plan to invest this capital in the bank in such a way that I could even put it up for sale4 immediately for purposes of disbursement. Purely for form’s sake I still inquire whether it is might then be possible for her to discharge such sums from her capital without real exposure to danger. She assures me that she has more money than she needs, receives an annual income of 50,000 Kroner, and never knows how to spend it all. Thereupon, I asked her {648} possibly to substitute for Mrs. Deutsch8 in the three cases of Vrieslander,|5 Roth,|6 and Dahms,7 whereupon she agreed most willingly, indeed she begged to be allowed to intervene more often in cases such as these or similar ones. 2 „so anzulegen“ marked for inversion.

3 „auch sofort“ marked for inversion.

4 “könnte”: original word altered in pencil: “zum Verkauf bringen”: he is presumably thinking of stocks, shares, or some sort of negotiable instruments, rather than depositing in a savings account.

8 Sofie Deutsch, long-term pupil and benefactress of S (died January 5, 1917), under whose will S was left a legacy, a pension, and control over money to fund stipends for impecunious composers; but S was encountering legal obstacles to his control over the stipend funds and is clearly proposing using money offered by Angi Elias as a stop-gap until those obstacles are overcome.

SUMMARY:
Elias hands S 10,000 Kroner, and S conceives a plan to bank it and disburse it when necessary; suggests it be used to substitute for Sofie Deutsch money.
