COMMENTARY: FOOTNOTES: 1 Cf. Diary entry OJ 1/5, p.19, Wednesday September 5: “Schubert’s cyklische Strukturen” (Schubert’s cyclic structures), which presumably represents part of these studies. S discusses cyclic structure on pp.326-7 (§130) and 386 (§158); neither contains reference to Schubert. 2 (Cf. diary entries for September 19 and 21.) Of the completed book, the final chapter is Part II, Section 2, Subsection 1, chapter 3, “Modulation through Enharmonic Change," pp. 441-444 (§§ 179-190), which deals with matters of temperament and notation. After that, there is a Subsection 2, undivided into chapters, "The Theory of Modulating and Improvising Preludes" (§§181-182), which is critical of Salomon Jadassohn's Kunst zu modulieren und Präludieren (Leipzig: Breitkopf & Härtel, 1890). In neither of these is there any reference to Schubert. -- It is possible that these studies ended up in the "Niedergang" text, OC 31/28-153. OC 32/435-443 are three substantial typewritten essays on Schubert songs--"Ihr Bild," "Die Stadt," and"Meeresstille"--and in the section of the "Niedergang" text on Hugo Wolf appear the marginal references to "Ihr bild" and "Die Stadt," suggesting that those two essays at least may have been written at this time.
