Diary entry by Schenker, dated November 15, 1908

Diary entry by Schenker, dated November 15, 1908

November 15, 1908 [:] Someone else Dr. Robert Hirschfeld|1: incapable of making a comment on my Theory of Harmony, he turns all the more sharply against the more modest [Instrumentation] Table.2 He assimilates it by eye, and believes that in so doing he understands it. {93} But in order to divest himself of the gratitude that he at least ought to feel for having finally learned something from it that was unknown to him until then—in any case, it what he has learned from me is more than any reader of his Feuilletons was in a position to learn from him himself. In any case, it is true this is true, while he admittedly he who has just been enriched by me ungratefully denies this it, and he prefers to make childish objections and ironical comments: he thinks this or that is lacking. Would it even be possible to fit all that on the one inexpensive Table all that Dr. R. H. still does not know?! Or would we need a couple of[?] volumes for it? Have Berlioz’s and Gevaërt’s works3 done anything for his ignorance knowledge? I don’t think so! Criticism merely for the sake of criticism and knavery—that’s what it is, and nothing more.4
