Handwritten letter from Cotta to Schenker, dated November 27, 1909 [Cotta letterhead] Hochgeehrter Herr Doktor ! In vorzüglicher Hochachtung verbleibe ich © In the public domain. |
Handwritten letter from Cotta to Schenker, dated November 27, 1909 [Cotta letterhead] Dear Sir, On my return from a brief holiday, I was able to examine the magnificent album that the authors of the Cotta publishing house had very kindly dedicated to me on the occasion of the double jubilee of my firm1 and of my fifty years as a self-employed publisher.2 In it, to my great pleasure I also came across your contribution,3 which I very greatly appreciate. Please accept my sincere, heartfelt thanks for it; I can assure you that the Cotta “Author Album” will remain for ever one of the dearest memories of my whole career as a publisher. I remain, with kind regards, © Translation Ian D. Bent 2005. |
COMMENTARY: FOOTNOTES: 1 Doppeljubiläum = 50 × 2 = 100 years, i.e. centenary. The firm was established in 1659 by Johann Georg Cotta, with the name J.G. Cotta'sche Buchhandlung ( Enc. Brit. ), thus had been in existence for 250 years. Perhaps the “Nachfolger” designation was created in 1809 or perhaps it celebrated the move of the firm from Tübingen to Stuttgart in 1811. 2 Adolf and Paul Kröner bought the firm in 1889 ( Enc. Brit. ), but this implies that Adolf had been a publisher since 1859. [biog. note ...] 3 [??] SUMMARY: © Commentary, Footnotes, Summary Ian D. Bent 2005
