Handwritten letter from Elias to Schenker, dated September 23, 1929

Wien, 23/IX-29

Lieber Herr Doktor!

Ihrer

Handwritten letter from Elias to Schenker, dated September 23, 1929

Vienna, September 23, 1929

Dear Doctor,

Sincere thanks for your friendly missive.1 I will appear at your place Tuesday October 1 punctually at 12 o'clock, and as always look forward to the recommencement of my studies.2 I am very curious about Oppel’s Waltzes,3 which gave you and your dear wife so much joy.

{2} I did not get back from Wels4 until the 14th, and have been staying at home since then to finish up various things that were not done before my departure.5

But now I hope to be able to dedicate myself once again to music, undisturbed as much as possible, and between now and October 1, as far as can be, to bring to a close the sketch of the voice-leading of the fugue by Handel7 begun in Vent6.

Cordial greetings to you and your dear wife from M[...?],8 and

Your

FOOTNOTES:

1 The item seems not to have survived.

2 Elias’s previous lesson had been on June 13, 1929, at the end of Schenker’s season. Her first lesson of the 1929/1930 season was on October 1, with regular lessons each Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, through to June 26, 1930.

3 The two sets of waltzes by Reinhard Oppel are: (1) Walzer fuer Klavier. Frau J. Schenker zur Erinnerung an den Sommer 1929 in Galtuer, and (2) 3 Walzer vom Sommer 1931 in Galtuer. Frau J. Schenker in immer gleicher Verehrung gewidmet von Reinhard Oppel. Both remain in MS, but publication by Ries und Erler and a recording by Heejung Kang are forthcoming as of 2006.

4 The city of Wels, on the Traun River in the foothills of the Eastern Alps, is approx. equidistant between Munich and Vienna. It has Roman remains and an imperial castle, and holds an annual fair, the Welser Messe.

5 Elias wrote continuously, but then inserted a paragraph-sign before “Nun.”

6 Vent is a ski village in the foothills of the Wildspitze mountain, near to Obergurgl and Sölden, in the Ötztal region.

7 No item answering this description and identified with Elias appears to survive in OC or OJ.

8 “von den [M...?]”: the indecipherable word must be plural.

SUMMARY:
E will attend for lesson on October 1; expresses curiosity about Oppel Waltzes; will dedicate herself to voice-leading sketch of Handel fugue.
