------------

Sehr verehrter Herr Doktor !

[ sign’d: ] Hertzka

Dear Doctor,

Please forgive me for not having, on account of a slight indisposition, replied to your est’d letter of the 22nd inst.1 until today.

First and foremost, I have to inform you that the proofs of your Lectures on the Ninth Symphony|2 can definitely not be expected much before August, since our printing firms are so excessively busy that a brief standstill is now in force. I was no longer able to count on the manuscript, which you submitted to me last month after a delay of several months, for the Summer period, and this is the sole reason why the work will not be able to appear in September.

I found your other observations extraordinarily interesting, and I entirely share your opinion on all of them. I am afraid that is not much use to you, but I hope that we will indeed yet reach {2} agreement regarding the Beethoven Sonatas3 and the Bach project.

In the meanwhile, I wish you a good and enjoyable Summer, and remain

With cordial greetings,
Yours most truly,
[ sign’d: ] Hertzka

FOOTNOTES

1 presumably WSLB 77, actually June 21, 1911.

2 The initial title of S’s monograph Beethovens Neunte Sinfonie (1912).

3 “Beethoven Sonaten”: underlined, presumably by S. Reference is to the plan, first mooted by H at a meeting with S on October 14, 1910, to publish the last five Beethoven sonatas and Part II of the Well-tempered Clavier (the latter a residue of an earlier plan dating from December 1908, which Schenker had declined) in alternate years; mentioned in OC 52/325 of the same day, and WSLB 68, October 21, 1910 (when S had discussed it direct with Bopp). The plan was, however, dependent on a subvention from the Austrian Ministry of Education that was never forthcoming.

SUMMARY
[ Beethovens Neunte Sinfonie:] Proofs will not be available before August, and publication will not take place in September. — Still hopes to reach agreement on Bach/Beethoven project.
