Sehr geehrter Herr Professor !

Sie vermuten¹ neuerlich Vorgänge oder Absichten, die nicht existieren. Wenn Sie, wie wir dies besprochen haben, die weiteren Bach-Bände für die U.E. mit Vortragszeichen und Fingersätzen versehen wollen, so wird es uns eine Freude sein, die Werke in Ihrer Herausgabe zu drucken. Wenn Sie wegen Zeitmangel erst im Sommer an die Sache gehen können, so wollen wir auch bis dahin gerne warten.

Wenn Sie noch irgendwelche weitergehende Wünsche haben, so bitte ich Sie, dieselben zu äussern und wenn sie erfüllbar sind, so wird denselben entsprochen werden.² Immerhin werden Sie es ^aber nicht für unberechtigt finden, wenn ich von Ihnen in dieser Angelegenheit irgend eine Aeusserung erbitte.

Wie Sie auf den seltsamen Gedanken kommen konnten, dass es im Geschäftsinteresse, vielleicht auch im künst-{verso}-lerischen Interesse der U.E. gelegen sein kann, dass Sie Bach zurücklegen,³ ist mir rätselhaft, nachdem es meine Ansicht dahin geht, dass es sowohl im Geschäftsinteresse, als auch im künstlerischen Interesse unseres Unternehmens gelegen ist, wenn wir die übrigen Bände von Bach in Ihrer Revision herausbringen.

Ihre Kritik, dass die U.E. heute ihren Schwerpunkt in antimuskalische Musik verlegt,⁴ hat mir das erste Lächeln am heutigen Tage, an dem ich mehr als notwendig geplagt war, abgerungen; nun, das ist aber kein Thema für heute.

Ihre Chromatische Phantasie geht anfangs März, wie bereits erwähnt, zum Stich und wird noch im Frühjahr herauskommen.

Ich hoffe, dass mein heutiges Schreiben keine Veranlassung geben wird, aus demselben Dinge herauszulesen, die weder in demselben, noch überhaupt vorhanden sind und begrüsse Sie

in vorzüglicher Hochschätzung

Dear Professor,

You are starting to imagine¹ actions or intentions that are non-existent. If you want to do the further Bach volumes for UE in the way we have discussed, [just] with performance markings and fingerings, then it will be a pleasure for us to print those works in your edition. If through lack of time you cannot get to work on them until the Summer, we will also gladly wait until then.

If you have further wishes of any sort whatsoever, please let me know them, and if they are doable they will be met.^{2 But} you will at least not think me unreasonable if on this matter I ask you for some statement of intent.

How you could arrive at the strange idea that it could be in UE’s commercial interests, perhaps even in the {verso} interests of art, for you to lay Bach aside,³ is puzzling to me, since in my view it is in both the commercial and the artistic interests of our company for us to publish the remaining volumes of Bach in your edition.

Your criticism that UE places its main emphasis these days on anti-musical music⁴ drew from me the first smile of a day that has tormented me more than usual; however, that is no topic for today.

Your Chromatic Fantasy [& Fugue] goes for engraving at the beginning on March, as already mentioned, and will still appear early in the year.

I hope that my letter of today will give no cause to read into it things that neither are present in it nor have any basis in reality. I send you my good wishes,
