Sehr geehrter Herr Doktor !

Dear Doctor,

As things currently stand, there is unfortunately no likelihood of the proofs for your Bach edition1 reaching you by the middle of this month. There is such a standstill3 at the moment at Eberle2 that I am at a loss to know how to keep things going, and shall probably be forced to give the job to Leipzig,4 from whom we will, I hope, get it back very shortly.

However, I still do have to wait a while. Since in any case publication is certainly no longer possible before Fall,5 a few extra weeks is neither here nor there.

I would be interested in having a report from you on the other projects about which we have repeatedly had discussions.6 You have not given an answer to my last {verso} news on this front.

FOOTNOTES:

1 i.e. Chromatische Fantasie und Fuge D moll: Kritische Ausgabe mit Anhang von Heinrich Schenker (Vienna: UE, 1910), for which Verlagsdruckbuch UE 2540 records the printing order as having been given on September 20, and the edition as having been released to the publisher on October 21, 1910 in a print-run of 500 copies. This is in response to WSLB 55, April 5, in which S expresses the hope that the proofs will reach him by mid-April.

2 R. v. Waldheim, Josef Eberle & Co, Viennese firm of music engravers, known as Waldheim-Eberle.

3 Stockung: unclear whether he implies an industrial stoppage (a strike), a holdup (maybe due to equipment difficulties), or just a slowdown due to an excessive backlog.

4 H presumably alludes to Breitkopf & Härtel printing works in Leipzig.

5 "vor Herbst": underlined in crayon, presumably by S.

6 See WSLB 52, February 7, and OC 52/45, February 11, 1910. This inquiry refers to S’s editing of several other works of J. S. Bach for UE, as discussed by the two men in person on April 1, 1909, and confirmed in writing by H in OC 52/920, April 1, 1909.

SUMMARY:
[J. S. Bach: Chromatic Fantasy & Fugue:] Proofs will not reach S mid-April on account of a standstill at the engravers. H inquires about the other projects they have discussed.
