COMMENTARY: FOOTNOTES: 1 OC 52/12, January 20, 1904, a letter from E. Ascherberg & Co., London (in response to a letter from UE of December 31, 1903) in English: [E. Ascherberg letterhead] Universal Edition Dear Sirs, Referring to your favor of December 31st. we have sent a representative to the British Museum in accordance with your request. At the expense of much time and trouble he has been able to trace the Ballads you refer to, with the exception of Nos. 46 & 50, which have evidently never been arranged by Haydn – only by Kozeluch. We understood from your letter that the songs (as arranged by Haydn) { right } were to be found in vol. G. 370, but only 4 of these are arranged by Haydn in that volume, all the others being arranged by Pleyel and Kozeluch. To trace the other numbers it was necessary to search through many volumes and collections of Scotch Ballads and Airs. Only a few of the string accompaniments are in existence. We are by this post forwarding copies of all the arrangements to which Haydn’s name may safely be put. We [remain] © Transcription Ian D. Bent 2004. SUMMARY: © Commentary, Footnotes, Summary Ian D.
