Sehr verehrter Herr Doktor!

Dear Doctor,

Warmest thanks for your cordial letter.1 In the meantime you may have heard that Dr. Einstein2 is publishing the essay,3 likewise (probably in the very next issue) a book review of Meisterwerk III,4 which I hope will meet with your approval. I take the liberty of asking: in one of the Tonwille issues you discussed an “N.B.” written by Beethoven on Bach’s second C-major fugue—I have looked through Beethoven’s musical Nachlaß here; but along with partitas and inventions (with several such x’s), it contains only the first volume of the Well-Tempered Clavier.5 I would be most grateful if you could write and tell me where this second volume is, or whether you learned of it from somebody else. Meanwhile I remain with best thanks and with a heartfelt Easter greeting to you and your good wife,

Yours most faithfully,
[ sign’d: ] Oswald Jonas

FOOTNOTES:

1 i.e. OJ 5/18, 4, March 16, 1931.

2 Alfred Einstein [create biogfile and link]. He was editor of the Zeitschrift für Musikwissenschaft 1918–33, to which J is referring here.

3 The essay was “Das Autograph von Beethovens Violinkonzert,” Zeitschrift für Musikwissenschaft XIII (May 1931), 443-450.

4 A review entitled „Heinrich Schenker: 'Das Meisterwerk in der Musik’“ appeared in the Zeitschrift für Musikwissenschaft for June 1931, a copy surviving in S’s scrapbook, OC 2/p.83.

5 J is recalling "Bach - Beethoven," the first section of "Vermischtes" (Miscellanea), Der Tonwille, Heft 5 (1923); the passage in question appears on p. 43 (trans., vol. I, p. 162), and the discussion is of WTC, Book II, C minor Fugue. S corrects this and gives the citation in OJ 5/18, 6, April 1, 1931, q.v.

SUMMARY:
Thanks S for OJ 5/18, 4; reports that his own essay and a review of Das Meisterwerk III will appear in Zeitschrift für Musikwissenschaft; asks question about a discussion in Der Tonwille of a Bach fugue copied out by Beethoven.
