Geehrter, lieber Herr Dr Jonas!1

Dear Dr. Jonas,1

Sunday, 11:00, I finished Free Composition|2 proper; it all began with the scale-degrees in Vol. I,3 it stops with the scale-degrees in Free Composition; everything having to do with compositional “technique” is herewith done! Out of a sense of obligation, however, I am adding two more chapters: on “Meter” and “Form.” But first I have to interpose an 8-day recess, so ravaging has the work been for me. –4

A passage in a letter from van Hoboken5 makes me wonder about the fresh difficulties he makes for you; ghastly, when you stop to think that {recto} he settled 4,000 schillings monthly on his ex-wife, and more along the same lines . . .

With best greetings to you from both of us,

Yours,
[ sign’d: ] H. Schenker
