Sehr geehrter Herr !

.|Autor ------------------
.|...........................|Werke ---------
.|............|“auch S.“|---------------
.|............|..............|

Mit ausgezeichneter Hochachtung

Dear Sir,

Here, at long last, is the Index of Names and Titles.1 This concludes the work. Please impress on the type-setter in this connection that the composers’ names should range far out to the left on a separate line, making their alphabetic order clearly visible for look-up purposes. After that, below and about one-and-a-half fingers’ width to the right, come the work titles in the order that I have given them.

Following this, for quite a few composers there are page-references to the text, preceded by “also p.”. Since they refer not to the works but to the composers’ names, these must be positioned somewhat to the left but not as far left as the beginnings of the names. This produces three columns:

.|Composer-------------
.|...........................|Works ---------
.|............|“also p.“ |------------------
.|............|..............|

With kind regards,
[ sign’d: ] H. Schenker

FOOTNOTES:

1 This appears on pp. [453]–460 of the finished volume, and the printer’s layout adheres closely to the specifications that S gives here.

2 gathering 28 = pp.433–448; strictly speaking, gathering 29 = pp.449–464 (including the Index and four pages of advertisements), but Schenker must be referring just to pp.449-452.

3 This will eventually occupy pp. [IX]–XVI of the prelims gathering.
