Lieber Herr v. Cube!

Es wird sich, über meine Empfehlung, bei Ihnen ein junges, 16-17jähriges Geschöpf melden zum Unterricht in Theorie. Sie ist Schülerin einer ehemaligen Schülerin von mir, mir persönlich unbekannt.² Setzen Sie ohneweiters 100.000K per Stunde an u. nehmen Sie 8x des Monats, (Feiertage ab!) u.s.w., [two illeg. words] Zahlung zum Muster, wie es meine ehemalige Schülerin kennengelernt hat u. selbst wieder befolgt. Näheres mündlich.

Dear Mr. von Cube!

It has been arranged, on my recommendation, that a young, sixteen- or seventeen-year creature will call at your place for tuition in theory. She is the pupil of a former pupil¹ of mine, personally unknown to me.² Without more ado, set 100,000 Kroner per hour and give her eight lessons per month (excluding holidays), etc., [two illeg. words] as your regular fee, which my former pupil is familiar with and has herself adopted. I shall explain more when I next see you.

¹ “Schülerin … Schülerin”: lit. female student, in both cases.

² This appears to be Cube’s first offer of employment since arriving in Vienna almost a year before. The lessons apparently did not go smoothly, as Schenker mentions Cube’s early difficulties as a teacher a year later, in a letter to Cube’s father (vC2, September 13, 1925). Neither the name of the pupil nor that of her teacher is given in either letter.
