My dear Mr. v. Cube,

Thank you for the letter and the picture1 When you arrive in Cologne, visit the parents of my pupil from Cologne, who is in his third year of study with me: Dr Albersheim, a senior health official.2 They will certainly be delighted to greet a colleague of their son at their home. You should likewise track down the conductor Felix Hupka at the opera house; he also studied with me. Best greetings from me and my wife.

Yours,
[ sign’d: ] H. Schenker

FOOTNOTES:

1 S had supplied C with two copies of Victor Hammer’s mezzotint portrait of S, one of which was displayed in the exhibit in the Scheuermann bookshop in Duisburg in June 1924 for S’s 60th birthday (OJ 9/34, [13], July 6, 1928). S had told C to keep one for himself, and asked for “the second Hammer portrait” to be sent to him in Vienna in October (vC 17, July 13, 1928) and C dispatched it on October 4 (OJ 9/34, [14]).

2 Gerhard Albersheim [create biogfile and link] was a pupil of Schenker’s in the late 1920s. An early essay, “Heinrich Schenker: Grundlagen und Bedeutung seines Werkes,” was written with his teacher’s help and published in the Rheinisches Theater- und Musik-Zeitung in 1930. The original draft is preserved as OC B/112-134, and copies of the published article as OC B/135 and OJ 21/23.

SUMMARY:
S acks receipt of Hammer portrait; urges C when in Cologne to visit Gerhard Albersheim's parents and Felix Hupka.
