Handwritten postcard from Schenker to Hertzka (UE), dated July 1, 1909

Dear Director,

I envision departing for the Tyrol at the latest on Saturday, the 3rd of this month,1 and therefore ask whether you would arrange for the editions of 1) Steingräber and 2) Breitkopf & Härtel + 3) Röntgen (with regard to the Chromatic Fantasy & Fugue!2) to be sent to me as soon as possible. And finally, one more thing: Would you be so very kind as to send me a copy of the latest harmony treatise from your publishing house (by Dr. Stöhr),3 which Dr. Brünauer4 has shown me? So hurry up!

With kind regards,
Yours truly,
[ sign'd: ] H. Schenker

FOOTNOTES:

1 Schenker had certainly arrived at his Summer address, Steinach in the Tyrol, by July 7, on which day he wrote postcards to Cotta (CA 103) and Moriz Violin (OJ 7/4).

2 These three editions were requested by S on June 23, 1909 (WSLB 39) and June 26 (WSLB 40). Click on Julius Röntgen.

3 Richard Stöhr: Praktischer Leitfaden der Harmonielehre, UE 2013 (Vienna: UE, 1908), a copy of which existed in Schenker's private library (catalogue Musik und Theater: Enthaltend die Bibliothek des Herrn Dr. Heinrich Schenker, Wien [Vienna: Hinterberger], item 288). In 1913, the 3rd enlarged and revised edition was advertised with the note “The work has now already appeared in its third edition in less that two years. Adopted for use in the curriculum of the Imperial-Royal Academy of Music in Vienna and many other educational establishments.” (OC Scores, No.26, single-page ad in LfS 109 ).
