Handwritten letter from Schenker to Hertzka (UE), dated January 30, 1918

Sehr geehrter Herr Direktor !

Handwritten letter from Schenker to Hertzka (UE), dated January 30, 1918

Dear Director,

Professor August Halm (Esslingen, etc.), who has made mention of our Beethoven edition in yet another place, has written telling me that he meanwhile asked UE to send him my other works published by you, but unfortunately without result to date.1 I can scarcely believe that Mr. Halm of all people, after such a showcase of a review as he published in Jena,2 would be refused other review copies. Does that mean you can actually think of a better reviewer to choose [for this]?

If however, in spite of this, against all expectation UE should deny [him] the copies (II,3 C. P. E. Bach Critical Edition and Contribution to Ornamentation (2nd edn!), and as far as I am concerned also the four-hand Handel [organ concerto arrangements], Niloff [Instrumentation Table] (latest edn!), and Chromatic Fantasy & Fugue,4) then I am prepared to pay for these copies myself, but needless to say in the correct manner according to the original price and minus the retail mark-up, which is in this case inappropriate, and also not according to the German rate of exchange, etc; in short, at that price which has for so many years been adhered to for my own purchases. In any case, I ask you, my dear {2} Director, to notify me when they are dispatched, so that I can pen a few words to Halm at the same time to accompany them.

With warmest thanks in advance,
Yours truly,
[ sign’d: ] H. Schenker

FOOTNOTES:

1 Halm informs S in his letter of January 20, 1918 (OJ 11/35, 7) that he has requested the items from UE, but met with silence. [create biogfile and link]

2 Perhaps August Halm, “Heinrich Schenker,” Die Freie Schulgemeinde, October 1, 1917, preserved in S’s scrapbook, OC 2/p.53 (though it is there described as a „biographical essay“, whereas S portrays it as a review of LfS).

3 “II” would normally refer to NMTP, vol. 2, Kontrapunt[I], which was published not by UE but by Cotta, who had supplied Halm with copies of Harmonielehre and KontrapunktI by July 21, 1917 (OJ 11/35, 9[b]). This item has been heavily double-underlined in crayon, presumably by UE staff, and crossed through.

4 These items have been heavily sidelined in crayon, and each has been underlined and separately (with the exception of the Handel and Chromatic Fantasy & Fugue ) crossed through, presumably by UE staff as they checked each work off.

SUMMARY:
Complains that Halm's request to receive review copies of others of S's works has been ignored by UE, threatens to pay for them himself, and asks to be notified when they are dispatched.
