Leider kann ich nicht vor Dienstag (d.i. den 2. November) bei Ihnen eintreffen.¹ Nicht nur die übliche unumgängliche Arbeit u. Stunden, sondern auch eine kleine Beinhautentzündung² ist es, die geschont werden will.

Dear Director,

Unfortunately, I cannot get to your office before Tuesday (i.e. November 2).¹ Not just the usual inevitable work and lessons, but also it is a little inflammation of the periosteum² that needs taking care of.

¹ in response to OC 52/41, October 26, 1909, requesting a meeting “in the next few days” (the 27th being Wednesday).

² Periosteum is the membrane around bone, in this case dental. Possibly the periodontal ligament, i.e., the connective tissue around a tooth, is intended here, inflammation of which, formerly called “pyorrhea,” can lead to bleeding gums and ultimately tooth loss.
