Handwritten letter from Schenker to Hertzka (UE), dated October 21, 1910

[ faint, illeg writing in upper margin ]

Sehr geehrter Herr Direktor !

Dear Director,

By chance, I made the personal acquantaince of Director Bopp yesterday morning. I took the opportunity to comply with the wish that you expressed during our conversation on Friday1, and raised with him the question of the Sonatas.2 Might you, since you encounter him frequently, hear direct from him what he thinks about it? I don’t think I am mistaken in thinking that Book 2 of the Well-tempered Clavier is even closer to his heart. This certainly needs discussing.

With kind regards,
Yours truly,
