Handwritten letter from Schenker to Hertzka (UE), dated January 15, 1912

Sehr geehrter Herr Direktor !

Hochachtung
Ihr ergeb.

[in upper margin:]
NB.

Dear Director,

Herewith gatherings 3 and 4 returned complete with imprimatur.1 Let us hope that no further wrong is done to gathering 4 by the typesetter.

I accept with gratitude your suggestion of adding a structural diagram to each of the other movements as well as the first. However, that presupposes that we are in agreement over the interpolation of a blank leaf, and that the printers are notified to this effect before they cast off the relevant gathering (I believe gathering 8 is next2). It may yet be the turn of gathering 8 this week, so I might ask for your advice as to whether we are to go ahead with implementing your suggestion. I am game.

With kind regards,
Yours truly,

[in upper margin:]
NB. I made the structural diagram just for the 1st movement particularly because it was the least known and mostly badly played! You only have to watch the differences in applause: the Scherzo gets the most, then the Adagio, after that the Finale, and the first movement comes in a distant fourth!

FOOTNOTES

1 See WSLB 91 for earlier discussion of the problems in gathering 3.

2 Gathering 8 = pp. 113–128, the last full gathering of mvt 1. Thus gathering 9, pp. 129–144, is the crucial gathering, containing pp. 135/136 , the leaf dividing mvt 1 from mvt 2.

SUMMARY
S accepts H's proposal that he create a structural diagram for each of the last three movements, and discusses its implementation.
