Purposes for Educational Assessment

Assessment tools used for admissions, scholarships, placement and awards include a wide variety aptitude, ability, and performance assessments. The main users of these assessments are individuals involved in implementing admissions, placement or rewards policies. The use of the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) as a criterion for determining admissibility of high school graduates to undergraduate degree programs is an assessment application falling within User Path 5.

Finally, assessment is also used in educational research contexts (User Path 6). Academic researchers measure variables to investigate their relationships to each other and obtain insights about educational phenomena. Such assessment tools are usually formally developed. They could focus on a range of educational constructs. While this book and module recognizes the sixth category of users, applications are not elaborated in detail because of the book’s practitioner focus.
