Chapter 7 Objectives

After studying this chapter and completing the structured exercises in the module, you should be able to do the following.

  • Describe the main components of assessment specifications needed to design or select written, structured-response (W-SR) assessment tools.
  • Select W-SR item formats that are best suited to measure learning outcomes represented in the achievement domain.
  • Develop assessment specifications, including a table of specifications, to guide item development or selection for a W-SR assessment tool.
  • Apply rules for writing different types of written, structured response (W-SR) items, namely, matching, fill-in-the blank, true-false, and multiple choice.
  • Evaluate the quality of W-SR items constructed to match particular specifications.
  • Construct and assemble W-SR assessment tools to meet specifications (OR Select assessments to meet specifications).
  • Conduct a content-based validation followed by revision of W-SR items and the overall assessment tool.
