PANEL DESCRIPTION

This panel was the fifth in an ongoing series of panels on Tibetan Information Technology (begun in Leiden with IATS-IX).  The panel was intended as a forum for the presentation and discussion of applied technologies in the field of Tibetan studies. Broadly defined, this panel covers a variety of topics from technical development issues -- such as data encoding and Tibetan-specific needs in systems' designs -- to the results of research in Tibetan studies utilizing information technologies.

Following the untimely passing of E. Gene Smith, it was decided to dedicate this conference's IT Panel to his memory. In his last years, Gene was fascinated by what had become possible thanks to new technologies, most importantly the capturing of unknown collections. He initiated and inspired innumerable projects across the world, and it is precisely with this in mind that we have decided to dedicate his memorial session to this particular aspect of his legacy. The memorial session was divided into a series of thematically grouped papers, indicated by the subheadings below.
