Current thoughts on stellarator coil manufacturing

• Coils to be wound into deep grooves in cylindrical sections of aluminum

• The 6 identical aluminum coil forms can be manufactured using CNC machining techniques

  • Cost is reduced because the pieces are identical
  • Grooves can be machined with submillimeter accuracy directly from 3-D CAD drawing
