Stellarator coil design studies are just beginning

• Because of the smallness of the device, disassembly is necessary in order to install or fix invessel components

• Because of the need for ultrahigh vacuum, the vacuum vessel must be baked to 300oC. Coils and vacuum vessel should be separated.

• Modular or saddle coils? Oversized interlocking planar coils? Current investigation.

• Price is a concern.

• Physics optimization is relatively simple - get good flux surfaces and good quasi-helical symmetry. Donít worry about MHD stability, average good curvature, bootstrap currents, etc. This is a basic plasma physics device.
