Possible Research Topics for IEOR 8100

For the research topics, there are many options. Please discuss your ideas with me. The research may be original research or it may be reading a few papers or part of a book and reporting on that, or some combination of those. I am thinking that the permissable research topics fall into three categories: (i) asymptotics for queueing systems, (ii) another topic on queueing systems, or (iii) stochastic-process limits for some other kind of stochastic model. That is, it should involve either queueing systems or asymptotic methods for stochastic systems.

Here are some suggested topics, with one or two candidate references. These are only intended to be illustrative. There are many other good queueing topics.

Queueing Systems

  1. Queueing in healthcare

  2. Queueing in finance

  3. Empirical/Statistical studies in queueing

  4. Behavioral or psychological issues in queueing

  5. Delay announcements queueing systems

  6. Stochastic comparisons of queueing systems

  7. Applications of numerical transform inversion to queueing systems

  8. Matrix-analytic approaches to queueing models.

    • Matrix-Geometric Solutions in Stochastic Models, by Marcel Neuts, The Johns Hopkins University Press, Baltimore, 1982.

    • Structured Stochastic Matrices of M/G/1 Type and their Applications, by Marcel Neuts, Marcel Dekker, New York, 1989

    • Introduction to Matrix-Analytic Methods in Stochastic Modeling, by Guy Latouche and V. Ramaswami, SIAM, Philadelphia, 1999.

  9. Queues with time-varying arrival rates.
