Encyclopaedia Iranica

The Encyclopaedia Iranica is a project of Columbia University’s Center for Iranian Studies and has been designed as a major research tool to provide a detailed and accurate picture of an important world civilization from prehistory to the present, a span of several thousand years. Covering a multi-lingual and multi-ethnic cultural continent, the Encyclopaedia Iranica encompasses all aspects of the life, history, and civilization of the peoples who spoke or speak an Iranian language; it also treats reciprocal influences and interactions between these peoples and the neighboring regions, as well as western and central Europe, Russia, and the United States.

The geographic centrality of Persia has given it an important role throughout history. The Encyclopaedia Iranica presents the Persian aspect of almost every field of human endeavor and how it has contributed to the development of world culture. The greatest significance of the Encyclopaedia is that it serves as the repository for wide-ranging research and resources that cannot be found in any other single source, serving scholars and researchers of many disciplines and backgrounds.

The Encyclopaedia Iranica has been universally acclaimed by reviews in academic journals. It has been variously called a “masterpiece,” “the greatest academic project of the 20th century concerning the Middle East,” the identity-card of the Iranian peoples,” and “a treasure-house of accurate and reliable information regarding the Iranian world.”

Thirteen volumes have been published, bringing us to the middle of the letter “ I.” Over the past two years, the Encyclopaedia project has also launched a new on-line edition. In addition to making all the published articles also available free of charge in an on-line version (www.iranica.com), basic articles are now being invited irrespective of alphabetical order through the letter Z. This is in order to 1) take full advantage of living scholars, and 2) to expedite the completion of the Encyclopaedia. Such entries are published first online and later in print.

The Encyclopaedia Iranica has received the patronage of the International Union of Academies (UAI) and the American Council of Learned Societies, and is supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities, an independent Federal agency. It has also been supported by contributions from individuals and foundations.
