Getting to Columbia

From the local airports

By taxi

The easiest way to reach Columbia University from the airport is by taxi. The average fare from LaGuardia Airport, the closest airport to the campus, is approximately $35, not including tolls and tips. Kennedy Airport has a flat fare of $45 not including tolls and tips to any single stop in Manhattan. (Bridge tolls and tip will add about another $13.) Taxi service from Newark Airport into Manhattan is available at a cost of approximately $80.

By bus

From LaGuardia Airport: New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA, http://www.mta.info) has a route (M60) that begins at LaGuardia Airport and travels directly to the Columbia campus. The fare is $2.50 and travel time is approximately 55 minutes. Buses run approximately every half hour, from 6 a.m. to 12 a.m. Buses run every hour all other times.

SuperShuttle Transportation Systems

SuperShuttle (http://www.supershuttle.com) provides bus service from LaGuardia, Kennedy and Newark to any location in Manhattan. Operates 24 hours daily, seven days a week from JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark Airports. Immediate arrangements can be made upon arrival via Airport Ground Transportation Desks. For groups of five or more, reservations can be made in advance by calling (212) 258-3826 or online at the SuperShuttle website at least 24 hours before your arrival.

Approximating travel time: The trip to/from LaGuardia takes approximately 35-55 minutes, while the trip to/from Kennedy and/or Newark takes about 45-65 minutes. The cost of the SuperShuttle service from travel into Manhattan ranges from $13 to $22 (one-way).

Driving to the Workshop

From the North:

Three options, depending on your starting point:

  1. Take New York Thruway (I-87) to the Cross Bronx Expressway in the direction of the George Washington Bridge. Bear right as you approach the bridge and take the exit for the Henry Hudson Parkway south. (Proceed using the directions for "within Manhattan.")
  2. The New England Thruway (I-95) becomes the Cross Bronx Expressway. Follow the CBE in the direction of the George Washington Bridge. Bear right as you approach the bridge and take the exit for the Henry Hudson Parkway south. (Proceed using the directions for "within Manhattan.")
  3. Take the Saw Mill Parkway south or the Cross County Parkway West to the Henry Hudson Parkway south. (Proceed using the directions for "within Manhattan.")

From the East:

Take the Grand Central Parkway or the Long Island Expressway west to the Cross Island Parkway north. Cross over the Throgs Neck Bridge to the Cross Bronx Expressway in the direction of the George Washington Bridge. (Proceed using the directions for "within Manhattan.")

From the South and West:

Take the New Jersey Turnpike (I-95) north or I- 80 east to the George Washington Bridge. Follow signs for the Henry Hudson Parkway south. (Proceed using the directions for "within Manhattan.")

Within Manhattan:

Columbia is best reached by traveling on the Henry Hudson Parkway (West Side Highway) and taking the 95th/96th Street exit. Use the 95th Street off-ramp, continuing past Riverside Drive and West End Avenue, to Broadway. Turn left onto Broadway and travel north to West 114th Street, where you will make a right. The entrance to Carman Hall is at the first gate on your left.

You may unload but may not park. Someone must remain with your car as you unload. For extended parking, use St. Luke’s Hospital parking garage further down the block on 114th Street and Amsterdam Ave. (If interested, please contact CSPA for garage rates.) Registration will be in the lobby library of the Carman Hall dormitory on campus.
