  Logging in to the Web
General

Many ColumbiaWeb services are restricted for a variety of reasons, including licensing and privacy issues. For access to many of these services--indicated by the icon at left--it is necessary to be using Netscape 3.0 or later, to log in with your CUNIX ID and password, to pass through a variety of security screens, and finally to log out when finished. Please note that other security measures may be in place that require a different procedure.

The Columbia University Certificate Authority ("CA") enables access to secure Columbia services for several years. The current Columbia University CA certificate was recently renewed, extending its lifetime from April 2000 to April 2002. Those who downloaded the certificate before April 2000 will need to download the new one. Certificates for particular Columbia web servers, e.g., "www1", expire annually each July 1.
