The
actual process of rebuilding is very elaborate, costing untold billions
of yen and taking eight years from the time that the first great cypress
trees are felled to provide the timbers of the new shrine. Many of the
ceremonies along the way involve the enthusiastic participation of the
local Ise population, as in this festival dedicated to the pulling of the
new logs up the river to the two shrines.
