Ecologists have a well-known tendency to generate prose that is excessively prolix. As a result, ecological literature tends to be filled with terms that are loosely defined or used in different senses by different people. The field of biodiversity and ecosystem function is certainly no exception. Here we provide definitions that have been provided in the literature for some of the more common or contentious terms.
