Ultra high vacuum (UHV) scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) study of the alpha-Fe2O3 (0001) Surface

uhv_1.jpg uhv_2.jpg

Figures Above: UHV-STM images of the alpha-Fe2O3 (0001) surface obtained after repeated cycles of Ar+ ion sputtering and annealing in vacuum at ~840 K. This surface preparation reduces the hematite (alpha-Fe2O3) surface and a magnetite (alpha-Fe2O3) selvedge forms. The surface unit cell dimensions and step heights are consistent with the alpha-Fe2O3 (111) termination. These images were collected at room temperature with a Omicron VT STM 25 in constant current mode with a -1.5 V sample bias and a tunneling current of 0.5 nA.
