Dr. Fish's areas of research include simulation, computational mechanics, mathematical optimization, micro-electro-mechanical systems, advanced materials, structural integrity and high performance computing. He is Founder and Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Multi-scale Computational Engineering.

Over the past 30 years (in both industry and academia) Dr. Fish (57) has been in the forefront of multiscale computational science and engineering, an emerging discipline that bridges the gap between modeling, simulation and design of products based on multiscale principles. He has an accomplished track record of technology transfer to industry. His multiscale methodologies have been employed by industry for manufacturing processes of GE90 fan blades; design of turbo-engines for Allison Engines, GE and Rolls-Royce; simulation of aerospace structural components for Lockheed-Martin and Sikorski; optimization of energy absorption mechanism for lightweight composite cars manufactured by Ford, GM and Chrysler; predicting environmental degradation of polyimide-based composites in collaboration with Boeing, GE Aviation and Renegade Materials; analysis of concrete targets subjected to impact loading by high speed projectiles; design of piezoelectric and ferroelectric materials; and numerous nanotechnology applications including nanodevices and nanocomposites sponsored by Northrop-Grumman, Sandia National Laboratory, Army Research Laboratory and Department of Energy.
Dr. Fish, the Carleton Chaired Professor of Engineering, is a recipient of the 2010 Computational Mechanics award from the International Association for Computational Mechanics (IACM) and the 2005 Computational Structural Mechanics award from the US Association for Computational Mechanics (USACM) given in recognition for his contributions to multiscale science and engineering. For his "significant contributions to computational science and engineering" he received 2003 Rensselaer School of Engineering Research Award. Dr. Fish has written over 160 journal articles, book chapters and books, two of which have won the best paper awards. His new book, A First Course in Finite Elements, was released in 2007 to wide acclaim. The book has been integrated into curriculums at more than 95 universities across the globe including Stanford University and Imperial College. It has been translated into Japanese and Portuguese and is currently being translated into Persian and French. Dr. Fish is a Fellow of American Academy of Mechanics, United States Association for Computational Mechanics (USACM) and the International Association for Computational Mechanics (IACM).
Dr. Fish is a past President of the United States Association for Computational Mechanics (USACM). As the President of USACM Dr. Fish has been instrumental in promoting computational science and engineering activities in US by organizing (or co-organizing) numerous workshops and conferences including the Seventh U.S. National Congress in Computational Mechanics, the First International Workshop on Multiscale Computational Engineering, the USACM Workshop on Computational Nanomechanics, and the Workshop on Simulation-Based Engineering. Dr. Fish was appointed by John Brighton, Associate Director for Engineering at NSF, to the Blue Ribbon Panel charged with examining research needs and opportunities in computational science and engineering that will in part determine a funding agenda for NSF and other government agencies.
Dr. Fish is a Founder and Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Multiscale Computational Engineering, which received the Best Journal Award from Begell House in 2008. He serves as an Associate Editor of the International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering and serves on the editorial board of the Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering, the International Journal of Computational Methods and the International Journal of Computational Engineering Science. He served as the Associate Editor of Journal of Engineering Mechanics, Editor of the Bulletin of United States Association for Computational Mechanics and chaired the ASCE Computational Mechanics committee. Dr. Fish is a member of IUTAM Working Party on Computational Fluid and Solid Mechanics, the US National Committee on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, the Executive Council of the International Association for Computational Mechanics (IACM). He served on the National Research Council for the Air and Ground Vehicle Technology and on the review panel of the Computer Information Sciences at Sandia National Laboratory. In February 2011, he was appointed by Israeli Minister of Education, Gideon Sa’ar, to serve as a member of the Council for Higher Education’s Committee.
