Programs at Columbia University
Columbia University offers a number of programs and
concentrations in Conflict Resolution:
| The
International Center for Cooperation & Conflict Resolution (ICCCR):
The ICCCR is part of the Program of Social-Organizational Psychology in the
Department of Organization and Leadership at Teachers College, Columbia
University. It was founded by Professor Morton Deutsch in 1986. Ellen Raider
joined the Center in 1987, and together they forged an approach to conflict
resolution, integrating theory and practice and facilitating the training of
reflective scholar/practitioners. The Center is currently under the direction of
Professor Peter T. Coleman, a noted scholar/practitioner in the field. ICCCR's mission is to help individuals, schools, communities,
businesses and governments better understand the nature of conflict and achieve
its constructive resolution. Certificates in Conflict Resolution, Master
of Arts (M.A.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Degrees in Social-Organizational
Psychology with a concentration in Conflict Resolution are offered. |
| The
International Conflict Resolution Program (ICRP):
ICRP, based at
Columbia's School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA), was founded in
1997 by David Phillips and is currently directed by Professor Andrea
Bartoli. ICRP's mission is to contribute to the resolution of international deadly
conflict through research, teaching and fieldwork. ICRP operates in both the classroom and
field, working toward a better understanding of international conflicts and the factors that
cause them. ICRP's purpose is to respond to these conflicts by coordinating the efforts of
academics and practitioners from governmental, nongovernmental and international
organizations in joint research and action. SIPA offers Master of International
Affairs )(M.I.A.) and Master of Public Administration (M.P.A.) Degrees with
course offerings in Conflict Resolution. |
| Alternative
Dispute Resolution:
Columbia's Law school currently offers its students courses in
negotiation, mediation and alternative dispute resolution law. The
Mediation Clinic and the Negotiation Workshop provide students with hands-on
opportunities to develop their conflict resolution skills. The Law School
offers Juris Doctor (J.D.), Master of Law (L.L.M), and Doctor of the Science of
Law (J.S.D.) Degrees. |
| Peace
Education Program:
In recognition of the unprecedented dimensions and overriding significance of issues of security, war and peace,
human rights and social justice, sustainable development and ecological balance in the nuclear age, the
Department of International and Transcultural Studies at Teachers College
Columbia University has developed a concentration in Peace Education. Students are encouraged to follow a program
that will prepare them to pursue the objectives of peace education in whatever area of education they choose to
concentrate. Master of Arts (M.A.), Master of Education (Ed.M.), Doctor of
Education (Ed.D.) Degrees in International Education Development with a
concentration in Peace Education are offered. |
