Mission

The purpose for the Columbia University Gospel Choir is to rejoice in the name of God through song as well as minister to the Columbia community. We are a Christian ministry dedicated to spreading the Gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We seek to lead others to the wonderful love and grace of Jesus Christ. The Gospel Choir relays the message of the Gospel through musical performances throughout the year. We meet to fellowship and sing praises to God.

History

Students at Columbia University and Barnard College tried for several years to establish a long standing gospel choir during the 1970s-80s. In 1994, the Lord rejuvenated the choir under "Dee", and a new director Vandalyn Kennedy, with a group of 12 students. Students from Columbia, Barnard, several graduate schools, staff and young people from all over the city began to worship our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in the Barnard/Columbia Gospel Choir. We experienced a brief period of "performance," but as the Lord "gave the increase," in 1996, under the Presidency of Yakeina Fidelia, BC 99', the Holy Spirit redirected the focus to Jesus through students with a more extensive background in the Gospel.

We continue to follow the Lord, under the direction of Ms. Kennedy, in what has become the ministry of the Columbia University Gospel Choir (CUGC). We have two annual concerts, minister at schools, ceremonies, churches and corporations throughout the tri-state area. We are thankful that the Lord continues to work in us, on us and through us to minister to the needs of disciples in the choir, and students all over the campus. To God be the glory for ALL the things He has done!
