How are edges or site boundaries defined? The subway, moving people to and from this location along a very clear line, could define the site's "inside edge". Studies of street character and view corridors acknowledge some of the invisible boundaries defining the site's presence to the city. Sectional studies reveal three speeds of traffic. These trajectories identify patterns that result from starting, stopping or changing momentum at particular intervals. While the movements originate beyond the site, they have a significant impact upon it at a local scale. Movements through the site are frustrated by the location and density of particular functional activites, which act as barriers between the site and the water. The historical mapping of Manhattan's growth reveals the hybrid nature of activities at the waterfront edge. Through juxtaposition and superimposition, apparently different or disparate conditions surface and impact upon each other to articulate the potentials inherent within the site. Scattered throughout are a series of hybrid pieces that tie together both the movement and physical elements, forming a composite which is one of the urban characters. This site is a point of arrival before moving through to the city, a point from which there is departure. and a space which forces movement through.
