Dr. Robert H. Remien is a licensed Clinical Psychologist and a Professor of Clinical Psychology (in Psychiatry) at Columbia University. He is also a Research Scientist in the HIV Center for Clinical and Behavioral Studies at the NY State Psychiatric Institute. Dr. Remien received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the Graduate Faculty of the New School for Social Research and has been involved in HIV treatment and care since the very beginning of the epidemic in New York City and has been conducting HIV-related research since 1987 when the HIV Center was first established with funding from the National Institute of Mental Health. Within the HIV Center, Dr. Remien is Director of the HIV Center's Global Community Core and in that role he fosters strong collaborations among researchers and community-based organizations, health departments, and hospital and other clinical care settings. His primary domains of research include access and adherence to care and treatment, HIV prevention, and the intersection of mental health and adherence and transmission risk behaviors, with an emphasis on the development and testing of innovative behavioral interventions among diverse populations in domestic and international settings. He is also faculty and trainer for the HIV Mental Health Training Project, clinical supervisor to psychiatric residents in training, and mentor to post-doctoral research fellows.
