Degree Requirements

 
FOR A MAJOR IN LATINO STUDIES
 
Program of Study: To be arranged in consultation with the director of the program. Students interested in a major should plan their program of study not later than the end of the sophomore year.
A Minimum of 39 points is required for completion of the major. Three core courses are required: Latino History and Culture, Introduction to Latino Studies, and one senior seminar. Students should also plan to take courses in the following categories:
 
Category A. Latin American studies (two courses)
Category B. Studies in race and ethnicity (two courses)
Category C. U.S. or Latino history (two courses)
 
Additionally, four courses must be taken within a designated area of study, preferably within a distinct discipline (e.g., anthropology, English, history, political science, sociology, Spanish). Students may also select their four courses within a distinct geographical or regional area within the Latin American/Latino experience. One of these four courses should be a seminar.
 
FOR A CONCENTRATION IN LATINO STUDIES
 
Courses: A minimum of 24 points is required for the completion of the concentration. The following core courses are required: Latino History and Culture, and Introduction to Latino Studies. Students should plan to take additional courses in the following categories:
 
Category A. Latin American studies (two courses)
Category B. Studies in race and ethnicity (two courses)
Category C. U.S. or Latino history (two courses)
 
Concentrators are not required to take a senior seminar, nor specialize in an area or field.
