Quick Search Tips
The Quick Search feature provides an easy way to do searches for ejournals with that have straightforward titles
or subjects. For advanced ejournal searching and for all print materials, please remember to use
CLIO – a more powerful and flexible search system.

Title (Start of Title) Search |
|
The Title (Start of Title) Search is a left-anchored phrase search that allows users to key in the initial words of a title
and retrieve only titles exactly matching the search argument. The last word is wildcarded. For example:
title = journal of the
me
retrieves
Journal of the mechanics and physics of solids
(Online)
Journal of the Medical Library Association (Online)
etc.

|
Title Keyword Search |
|
The Title Word Search attempts to match the user's search input against individual words appearing in ejournal titles.
The order of input does not affect retrieval. |
|
Subject Keyword Search |
|
The Subject Word Search attempts to match the user's input against the set of subject headings that were assigned to the
ejournal during cataloging. For example, a subject search for "folk literature" will retrieve the ejournal
"Marvels and Tales" because the subject heading "Folk literature--History and
criticism--Periodicals" was applied to the title by the cataloger. Both Library of Congress & Medical Subject Headings are
searchable in this way. |

Title Keyword Wildcarding (Truncation). Using Title Keyword Searching, terms are wildcarded on the right (only). For
example, a title search for the word "gene" retrieves titles with the word "gene" as well as those containing the word
"genes," "genetics" and "genealogy." This also means that standard journal citation formats may be used for
searching, e.g.,
J Polym Sci
J Vac Sci
Acc Chem Res
Acta Cryst

Common Words. Common words, such as articles and pronouns, are not indexed. (See the
entire stoplist.) If you include these words in the search box, they will be ignored and only the non-stoplisted
words will be searched. |
|
Diacritics & Special Characters. Diacritics and special characters such as apostrophes &
ampersands are ignored. |
|
Boolean (Multiple Word) Searches. When more than one word is entered into the search box, it is
handled as a Boolean 'and' search: only those citations with all search terms present are retrieved.
The Boolean "not" command is also available if needed to limit a result set to titles or subjects that omit specific words. To do this,
add a minus sign or hyphen "-" directly before the word to be excluded, e.g.,
medical -journal
or, to exclude multiple words:
medical -journal -bulletin |
